Industrial Circuit Breakers: Recondition, Refurbish, or Retrofit

  • Recondition: Maintain and restore the breaker to safe operating condition. Includes disassembly, cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and testing. Parts found to be worn, damaged, or out of spec are replaced following your approval of a parts quote.
  • Refurbish: This includes the entire reconditioning process, which involves disassembling, cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and testing. Then, a predefined list of high-wear consumable parts are replaced so the unit is in “like new” condition. Higher-cost items will be quoted only if they fail inspection.
  • Retrofit: Introduces modern technology to the breaker to deliver new functionality while reusing the existing cubicle and bus. Parts are new-design components or full kits engineered for the specific breaker.

Circuit Breaker Reconditioning and Modernization Options

Quad Plus is PEARL-certified and follows strict reconditioning and refurbishment processes as defined by ANSI/IEEE C37.59. We use only OEM or manufacturer-recommended parts without altering the breaker’s original design. Every replacement OEM part comes with a one-year warranty, so that you can be confident of your repaired parts.

Circuit Breaker Reconditioning

Reconditioning an industrial circuit breaker is a reactive service. Once an inspection is performed, any components that are beyond OEM tolerance are replaced. Rather than following a predetermined list of items, this process involves only changing out the parts that fail to meet acceptable standards. The breaker also undergoes complete disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, and testing to restore it to a safe operating condition.

Circuit Breaker Refurbishment

Refurbishment is a proactive service meant to return breakers to “like new” condition. It begins with every step of the reconditioning process. Then, we take it one step further by including a predetermined kit of wear components to be replaced, even if the existing ones pass inspection. This option ensures consistent performance and a fresh maintenance clock. We also offer refurbished breakers from our inventory, ideal for fast and budget-friendly replacements when time is critical.

Circuit Breaker Retrofits

Retrofitting is a transformative process for industrial circuit breakers. Major assemblies are converted or replaced to incorporate modern technology into old breakers, while reusing the existing cubicle and bus. Parts are new-design components or full kits engineered for the specific breaker and include updated controls, sensors, and sometimes new cradles or cassettes. For example, modern trip electronics can be added to gain higher interrupt ratings.

Circuit Breaker Repair

Our response teams are strategically located to ensure rapid turnaround across critical industrial regions. They provide emergency circuit breaker repair and onsite troubleshooting to restore operations quickly. Each breaker is visually inspected for worn or missing mechanisms. Electrical testing and analysis are performed to determine any issues. Upon approval for repair, defective parts are replaced. A final test and inspection are performed before the circuit breaker is returned to service.

Circuit Breaker Testing and Inspection Services

Routine and preventive inspections help avoid failure, support regulatory compliance, and ensure your breakers operate as designed. Circuit breaker testing can be performed onsite and while holding load to avoid disruptions to your operation.

testing industrial circuit breakers

Step 1: Testing

Visual and qualitative inspection to look for soundness, signs of overheating or excessive arcing, alignment, pressure, wear, corrosion, and indicator operation. Includes (when present) power control fingers, main contacts, arc chutes and contacts, close, trip, and cell interlock mechanisms, auto trip indicator, and breaker frame. Additional tests include insulation resistance tests of power conductors, DC contact resistance measurements, high-potential tests, and breaker operation in the test position.

industrial circuit breaker evaluation

Step 2: Evaluation

A test sheet will be supplied, showing results, observations, and recommended remedial actions. Each item is assigned a grade of A, B, C, or E to indicate the breaker’s condition, wear, use, and operation:
A: Good condition with slight wear and used under light conditions.
B: Satisfactory condition with normal wear under heavy conditions.
C: Immediate action is required for proper operation.
E: Unacceptable condition, the breaker should not be used.

Step 3: Repair & Cleanup

Once the breaker has been repaired, it will be cleaned and prepared for reinstallation. Dust and light residue will be removed, and any mechanisms that need lubrication will be attended to. If the breaker shows any abnormal corrosion or is otherwise in an abnormal condition or state, it will be reported to the customer.

Our technicians are NETA-accredited and provide a comprehensive evaluation of the electrical and mechanical components of your industrial circuit breakers. We clean and check all the main elements, then perform a series of tests to ensure proper functioning.

Detailed reports and documentation are provided with every inspection to support compliance and maintenance records.
